How to name a team (plus 150+ team name ideas)

9 September 2026 · 4 min read

A good team name is short, easy to shout and still makes sense halfway through the season. A bad one gets shortened to something nobody chose. This guide gives you a quick way to name a team, then 150+ ideas you can use or adapt.

How to name a team in five steps

  1. Start with what you have in common. Your town, your venue, your sponsor, the night you play, an inside joke. Names with a real story stick.
  2. Pick the tone. Serious (Ravens, Titans), playful (Net Results, Pitch Please) or local (Riverside Rovers). Mixed leagues and kids' teams usually suit playful or local.
  3. Keep it to one to three words. If the name does not fit on a shirt or in a chant, it will get shortened anyway.
  4. Say it out loud and search it. Check that it is not already taken in your league, that it does not mean something unfortunate in another language, and that the initials work.
  5. Put it to a vote. Shortlist three to five names and let the team decide. People commit to a name they chose.

Tip: run the vote where everyone already answers, not in a thread that scrolls away. TeamCheck Pro includes team polls with named or anonymous voting.

After the name: the boring bits

Once the name is settled, someone still has to make the roster, share the schedule and collect the money. Our guides to making a team roster and building a team schedule cover both.

Or skip the spreadsheet: create the team in TeamCheck, share one join code, and everyone confirms sessions with one tap. The free plan covers one team of up to 15.

Stop asking who's coming

Post the session once, everyone confirms with one tap, and fees are tracked per player. Free for one team of up to 15.
