What is the most popular sport in the world?

30 September 2026 · 4 min read

Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world. It has the most fans, the most players and the biggest TV audiences of any sport, and it is the number one sport in most of Europe, South America, Africa and large parts of Asia.

Below is the full top 10, how "popular" is actually measured, and why the answer changes if you ask in the United States or England.

There is no official global census of sports fans, so every ranking relies on estimates. The figures below are the ones most widely cited across sports media. Treat them as rough orders of magnitude, not precise counts.

RankSportEstimated fansWhere it is biggest
1Football (soccer)3.5 to 4 billionEurope, South America, Africa, Asia
2Cricketabout 2.5 billionIndia, Pakistan, England, Australia
3Field hockeyabout 2 billionIndia, Netherlands, Australia, Argentina
4Tennisabout 1 billionEurope, US, Australia
5Volleyballabout 900 millionBrazil, Italy, Poland, US
6Table tennisabout 850 millionChina, Japan, Germany

Cricket's huge number comes mostly from one country: India, home to roughly 1.4 billion people, follows cricket more closely than almost anywhere follows anything. Field hockey ranks high for a similar reason. Basketball's fan estimate looks low next to its reach on social media and in schools, which is a good reminder that these lists measure different things.

When people ask which sport is the biggest, they usually mean one of three things. Football wins all three, but the rest of the order changes.

Most watched

The FIFA World Cup is the most watched sporting event on the planet. FIFA reported that close to 1.5 billion people watched the 2022 final between Argentina and France. The only events in the same league are the Summer Olympics, which bundle dozens of sports together, and cricket's biggest India vs Pakistan matches.

Most played

Football is also the most played team sport, because it needs almost nothing: a ball and a bit of open ground. FIFA's global "Big Count" survey put the number of registered and casual players at around 265 million. Among individual activities, running, swimming and cycling have enormous participation, but most of it is casual rather than organized.

Most followed

By fans, football leads again, with cricket a clear second thanks to South Asia. After that, the order depends on whose survey you read, which is why basketball, tennis and volleyball swap places from list to list.

The US is the big exception to football's dominance. Ask Americans what they like to watch and American football comes first, and it is not close. Recent Super Bowls have drawn well over 100 million US viewers, the largest TV audiences of any kind in the country.

The usual order for US fans:

  1. American football — the NFL and college football dominate autumn weekends.
  2. Basketball — the NBA and March Madness, plus the most played team sport in American schools.
  3. Baseball — still huge in summer, especially in person.
  4. Soccer — the fastest-growing major sport, helped by the 2026 World Cup.
  5. Ice hockey — strongest in the northern states and next door in Canada.

Flag football is worth watching too. It is one of the fastest-growing youth and girls' sports in the US, and it will be an Olympic sport at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. We cover the season calendar in when flag football season starts.

In England, football is the national obsession, from the Premier League down to tens of thousands of grassroots clubs. After that:

  1. Football — by far the most watched and most played.
  2. Cricket — the summer sport, with county clubs and village teams across the country.
  3. Rugby union — especially in the south west and at schools.
  4. Tennis — Wimbledon makes it the sport of early July.
  5. Netball — one of the most played team sports among women and girls.

What this means if you run a team

Popularity has a practical side. The more popular a sport is where you live, the more players you can recruit, the more pitches and courts there are to fight over, and the more admin lands on whoever organizes the team: who is coming, who has paid, who knows the time changed.

That last part is what TeamCheck handles. Players confirm with one tap, fees are tracked per player and announcements stay pinned. If you run a football team, a basketball team or a cricket club, the free plan covers a squad of up to 15. Browse every sport we support.
